Hanes’s new underwear is like a bra for your balls

Today, Hanes is launching its biggest new product in years. It’s called the Hanes Comfort Flex Fit Total Support Pouch. As my editor suggested with all the subtlety of Shakespeare, it’s “a bra for your balls.” After talking to the Hanes team and wearing the underwear myself for a few days, I can tell you she’s right.
Developed over the course of two years, the Total Support Pouch is a patent-pending design that looks like a tiny crossover bra inside your boxer briefs. On the package, the product promises to “separate and support”—in other words, to lift your genitalia away from your body for a more comfortable fit.

The idea was born from competition. Hanes is a clear market leader in men’s underwear, boasting a 36% share of the $6.2 billion North American region. But its challenge, like any big company making classic products, is one of consistent growth. Hanes had been watching trends in the premium and direct-to-consumer underwear market for new trends and noted that pouches were becoming increasingly popular as a point of differentiation. Brands like Saxx, BN3TH, Sheath, and Shinesty (with the explicitly named Ball Hammock) were differentiating themselves through the pouch.
“They’re very expensive, not widely distributed,” says Jaye Powell of these competing pouch products; she’s the VP and GM of men’s underwear and socks for Hanesbrands. “There’s not a great consumer awareness around it.”
Indeed, I realize this may come as a surprise, but men aren’t thinking about their crotch all day. Once you put on just about any pair of underwear, it all pretty much feels figured out. You don’t want to wear loose boxers to play basketball, because that could be very uncomfortable, but that’s about it.
The handful of friends I spoke to for this article shared that they generally wear boxer briefs, which don’t lift anything up but effectively Ken doll your body in place. None of them complained that their genitalia flopped around under day-to-day conditions. However, one friend mentioned occasional chafing in hot weather. Another shared his latent fear that, as he grows older, his scrotum might lose elasticity and he’d sit on it—which can actually happen as men grow older and the collagen in their skin breaks down.
These sorts of responses are not surprising to Hanes. “Men can tell you the basics that they want in underwear: soft fabric and a nice waistband,” Powell says. “But when you get into how to construct a product, they can’t say.”
DEVELOPING THE PRODUCT
Hanes put together a team of five designers and four seasoned pattern-makers to study the category and begin prototyping how a Hanes pouch might work. They identified all sorts of approaches to pouch construction, ranging from athletic cups to pockets to an internal bag or tube, or something worryingly called “inside keyhole support.”
What they ultimately concluded was that most pouches offered lateral support, which controlled genitalia moving from side to side, but not much support beneath the scrotum. And the Hanes team felt that if it could lift this anatomy, it would lead to more overall comfort, along with less sweating and chafing.

Amphetamine is a free application for the Mac that allows the user to configure how long the computer will remain awake. The 2014 release has been well received by users, with over 432,000 downloads and five-star ratings on the Mac App Store. MacRumors has previously highlighted the app as well. Amphetamine has been available on the Mac App Store for six years before Apple unexpectedly removed it for not following their rules.
After a representative from Apple contacted Amphetamine’s developer, William Gustafson, to inform him that the software will be withdrawn from the Mac App Store on January 12, 2021 if several adjustments were not made, Gustafson posted a lengthy report on GitHub describing the situation. The agent stated that the following condition was not met by Amphetamine:
Tobacco and e-cigarette, illegal drug, and excessive alcohol consumption-promoting apps are not allowed in the App Store. Any app that targets kids or encourages them to use illegal drugs or alcohol will be removed. Tobacco, marijuana, and other controlled substances cannot be sold, and neither can they be facilitated for sale outside of legal pharmacies. According to reports, the Apple official stated “It seems like your software encourages people to take drugs in the wrong way. In particular, your app’s name and image both make allusions to illegal drugs and medicines.” As amphetamine is available only with a doctor’s prescription in the United States, Gustafson said, it doesn’t encourage drug abuse. He added that the film does not advocate for the “irresponsible, illegal, or recreational” use of amphetamine.
Amphetamine (the app) can be used in the same way as amphetamine (the chemical molecule) can be used to keep humans awake and focused.
To counter the claim against the app, Gustafson filed an appeal and started a petition on Change.org, which has since received over 500 signatories. And just now, he tweeted that he had just gotten off the phone with the App Review Board and that Amphetamine would still be available in the Mac App Store. It’s surprising that Apple forced Amphetamine to change its name after they highlighted it in a Mac App Store Story and the software received 1,400 reviews on the Mac App Store. Gustafson also claims to have had numerous conversations with Apple’s App Review Team on Amphetamine, but this issue has never come up before; the cause of this is a mystery.
