How to Live Well With Diabetes

sugars

Diabetes is a serious condition that can affect your overall life and health in a great way. If not properly managed, diabetes can lead to complications such as nerve damage, kidney problems, high blood pressure, and slow healing among others. If you have type 2 diabetes, you must learn how to control your glucose to prevent or delay the onset of serious complications.

Having diabetes, however, is not a death sentence. By eating a healthy diet and making important lifestyle changes it is actually possible to live a happy, full and satisfying life even after the diagnosis.

Here are 5 important tips for living well with diabetes.

Check Your Blood Glucose

If you have been diagnosed with type 1 or type 2 diabetes one of the most important things you can do is to keep your blood sugar within the target range. Work with your doctor and get a personalized plan on how often you should check your blood sugar. Be sure to maintain a routine so that you are more aware of what affects your glucose levels. By doing this, you can be able to detect problems before they get out of hand.

Eat Well

Eat Well

Healthy eating is very important even for people who are not diabetic. Did you know that a healthy diet can help you control and even reverse some of the complications of diabetes? A diabetic diet doesn’t need to be so complex and you don’t have to give up all your favorite foods. All you have to do is ensure that you make smart choices and eat foods that keep your blood sugar more even.

Eat meals with lower calories, trans fats, sugars, and salt. Choose foods that have more fiber, such as whole grains and cereals. Eat more fruits, vegetables, and healthy nuts to quench your cravings. Instead of taking juice or regular soda drink water or make whole fruit juices at home.

Keep Active

Ideally, you should exercise at least 30 minutes every day for five days every week. If you can, try aerobics since they keep your heart strong and healthy. Activities such as swimming, running, cycling and gardening are also very good since they keep your heart rate up. Regular exercise will help you maintain a healthy weight which is very important in your diabetes management plan.

Take Your Medication as Prescribed

Take Your Medication as Prescribed

Don’t forget to take all your medication as prescribed. Follow all the doctors’ instructions and make sure you are informed about drug interactions to avoid serious issues in the future. It’s always a good idea to have a pill organizer to ensure that you take all your medication when you need to. You can also set an alarm to remind you to take your next pill.

Seek Support And Stay Informed

Reach out to other people who are living healthy lives with diabetes by joining a support group in your area. A support group can encourage you to live a healthy life and enjoy your day to the fullest. It is also important to keep informed about the latest research and ask your doctor if new technology can be beneficial to you.
